Organizational History
Peeples Valley and Wilhoit areas were once one department. Neither area was a district and did not receive tax funding. There was no actual fire station at that time. The fire trucks were parked on the street, and they had to empty the water trucks in the winter to keep the water from freezing. In 1994, the fire chief suggested that Peeples Valley become a separate department. On April 4, 1996, each group signed the separation agreement to become separate entities. The auxiliary started the same year to raise money for the fire department. The Peeples Valley community formed the Peeples Valley Fire Department Corporation. A grant became available from the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors for “Community Projects.” With multiple efforts from residents and Yavapai County, the department was awarded the grant money. The ground-breaking ceremony for the new fire station and community center was on August 22, 1998. The grant contributed $60,000 toward the construction costs of the building, and community members contributed more than 7,000 volunteer hours to complete the station. In 2000, a large group of volunteers, including the board and firefighters, canvassed the Peeples Valley area residents to obtain signatures required for the Department to become a district. The fire operations side of the Peeples Valley Fire Department Corporation became a district in August of 2000. It was then decided that the auxiliary would keep the corporation’s non-profit status. This Peeples Valley Fire Department Corporation and Auxiliary raises funds for the fire district, promotes membership in the auxiliary, and assists with volunteers and funds for activities serving the Weaver Mountains communities. The fire district serves approximately 150 square miles, which includes Peeples Valley and Ruger Ranch, and partners with several other fire departments. Since its establishment, the Peeples Valley Fire Department Corporation & Auxiliary, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, has been serving the community. Thanks to all the generous donations, the auxiliary has made a substantial difference in the lives of our residents and the fire district.
