The Weaver Mountains Communities Firewise® Initiative is a wildfire-risk reduction program serving communities in the Weaver Mountains Region, including Peeples Valley, Yarnell, Congress, Kirkland, Wilhoit, Ruger Ranch, Skull Valley, and Wickenburg. It is coordinated by the Peeples Valley Fire District’s Fire Prevention and Safety Program.

What the Initiative Does

This program assists communities in the Weaver Mountains area as an extension of Yavapai Firewise, helping residents decrease wildfire risk through coordinated local efforts.

Key activities include:

  • Wildfire risk assessments performed by fire districts
  • Vegetation management/fuel reduction around homes and neighborhoods
  • Public education and outreach on wildfire preparedness
  • Community mitigation planning to improve safety in the Wildland–Urban Interface (WUI)

Benefits of Becoming a Firewise® Community

Communities that achieve NFPA Firewise USA national recognition may receive several benefits:

·       Lower homeowner insurance costs in some cases.

·       Better chances of maintaining insurance coverage in high-risk wildfire areas.

·       Improved home survivability during wildfires through defensible space and mitigation.

·       Eligibility for grants that help homeowners remove or reduce hazardous vegetation.

·        Access to education and outreach programs for residents.

Why It Matters

The Weaver Mountains region is situated in a Wildland–Urban Interface (WUI) zone where homes and wild vegetation coexist, raising the risk of wildfires. Community efforts—such as Firewise—are among the most effective ways to minimize damage and enhance safety during wildfires.

Community Participation

  • Forming or joining a local Firewise committee
  • Completing property risk assessments
  • Participating in community cleanup / fuel-reduction projects
  • Attending wildfire preparedness workshops

The success of the initiative depends on community involvement across all Weaver Mountains communities.
